| Our first bubble blowing hero, and the default character for Player 1. |
| |
|
|
| Our second hero, and the default character for Player 2. |
| |
| |
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 1 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Hidegons |
The basic enemy. He has no attack move, but can jump in order to climb platforms. Zen-Chan can only harm the player by coming into contact with them. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 6 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Drunk |
| One step up from Zen-Chan. Mighta moves in a very similar pattern to Zen-Chan but can also roll rocks across the ground which kill the player on contact. These rocks crumble should they hit a wall or platform. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 10 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Pulpul |
| These monsters have no attack move, but float in mid air. They move diagonally until they hit a wall or platform, at which point they turn 90 degrees and continue. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 20 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Monsta |
| Pulpul behaves very much like Monsta - floating around the level. The only difference between the 2 is their speed of movement - Pulpul moves at a faster rate than Monsta. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 30 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Unchanged |
| Banebou has no attack move, but bounces around the levels at high speeds on his spring. He kills the player on contact. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 40 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Zen-Chan |
| Hidegons moves around the level as per Zen-Chan, but is armed with fast-moving fireballs with which he attacks the player. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 50 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Mighta |
| Drunks run and jump around the levels like a standard monster, but as a form of attack can also throw their empty liquor bottles. These bottles act like boomerangs - they fly through the air until they reach a wall, at which point they then return to the monster. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Level 60 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Hidegons |
| Invader moves in the same way as the classic space invader. He can only move left and right, and he falls down any gaps that he reaches. Not only does invader move very rapidly, but also drops bombs as an attack. Interestingly Invader does not appear at all in Super Mode. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Any level except 97 & 100 if the player takes too long to clear it. |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Unchanged |
| Skel-Monsta appears if you spend too long on a level. He is indestructible but is limited in his movement - he can only move horizontally or vertically, and after moving either way for any distance he has to pause before he can move again. The length of the pause shortens the longer he has been in play. This makes him fairly easy to avoid but the only way to defeat him is to clear the level of all other monsters, or get a player with temporary invincibility to touch him. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: Any secret room if the player takes too long to clear it. |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Unchanged |
| Rascal guards the secret rooms. If the player spends too long in a secret room he will appear and attack the player using the same pattern that Skel-Monsta uses to guard the standard levels. |
| |
|
|
| First Level Encountered: 100 |
| Super Mode Replacement Character: Unchanged |
| This huge boss guards our heroes girlfriends on level 100. He bounces diagonally around the final level, firing a wide arch of bottles at regular intervals. Unlike most other creatures he can only be injured by hitting him with lightning bolts, which Bub and Bob create by collecting the lightning vases on the upper platforms on this level. He takes many hits to kill, and flashes when taking damage. |
|
| When he's taken enough hits he becomes trapped in a huge bubble. Whichever player pops this bubble receives a massive 1000000 points! |
|
| |
|
| In Super Mode when you pop Super Drunks bubble he turns into a giant Bubblun. Although he looks pretty mean, Giant Bubblun just falls to the bottom of the screen and cries. After a few seconds he turns into... |
| |
|
| That's right, with the evil spell broken Super Drunk turns into Giant Bubblun, who then turns into Bub & Bob's Mama & Papa. This only happens in the Super Mode ending. In Standard Mode Super Drunk simply explodes and Mama & Papa are not released from the spell. |
| |
|
| In both Standard and Super Mode upon defeating Super Drunk Bubblun is returned to his human form - Bubby - and reunited with his girlfriend Patty. |
| |
|
| In both Standard and Super Mode upon defeating Super Drunk Bobblun is returned to his human form - Bobby - and reunited with his girlfriend Betty. |
| |
|
Jumbo sized versions of most of the games monsters are shown carrying Patty and Betty away every 16 levels. |
| Level 16: Zen-Chan (Shown Above) |
| Level 32: Pulpul |
| Level 48: Banebou |
| Level 64: Monsta |
| Level 80: Hidegons |
| Level 96: Mighta |
Something everyone seems to have an differing opinion on is what's the correct name of the game characters. The names used above are based on the names used in the in-game ending sequence - as such it's fairly safe to assume that these were the original developers names and we'll deem these to be correct.
Part
of this confusion originates from the fact that the character names we're changed on the arcade cabinet artwork depending on the territory. This is shown in the below images.
Most home version ports used the US
arcade names, as shown in the insert from the UK C64 instructions shown below.
Although some developers decided to add to the
confusion by making their own names up which bare little or no resemblance to either the US or Japanese arcade names. For example the NES version instruction insert shown below.
