Whilst each level on Bubble Bobble has one standard and one special item pick-up, the majority of items are generated either by killing monsters or as a result of using a special item. This page explains these items.
Popping bubbled monsters gives the player points for popping the bubbles, as well as create a food pick-up.
The initial 'pop' points awarded are not accumulated, pick-ups are. So for example, if the player killed 3 monsters (using the table below) you can see that they would be rewarded 4000 points for the initial pop, and banana / apple & peach pick-ups would all be created, worth and additional 3500 points if collected.

Note that the points rewarded for the above pick-ups are not the same value as when they appear in the map as standard pickups.
If the player kills a creature whilst invulnerable due to the Chack'n heart pickup different pickups are created depending on the monster killed.

Killing monsters with special items will generally result in the monster being turned into a high value diamond. For pick-ups that kill all monsters instantly any bubbled monster awaiting popping will only be turned into the lowest value 6000 point diamond.

Collecting a Treasure Chests or Cane special item on a level will cause a large item to be generated at the end of the level. Any bubbles will be turned into small version of that large item.

Potions are explained fully in the special item page. The do however create a number of items - between 1 and 60 each with a value. As explained previously, by collecting all the items the player may find themselves rewarded with up to a 100000 point bonus.

Entering certain names into the scoreboard will cause secret items to be activated on the first level of the next game started.
